New course for Captain’s License offered

The Customized Training Department started its first United States Coast Guard approved course for Captain's License, Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) in January 2007. The OUPV License allows captains to carry 6 or fewer passengers for-hire plus crew. The Captain's license for OUPV covers all federal lakes, rivers and costal areas, including the Great Lakes.

Captain Gary Kulibert from Green Bay, Wisconsin will teach this course. He brings 40 years of boating and 30 years teaching experience to the class. According to Captain Kulibert, "People in the metro area enjoy recreational boating on the Mississippi, St. Croix, Great Lakes and in the Caribbean. This course will help you navigate safely and give you the skill-level confidence of a professional. This 56-hour course will also prepare individuals seeking to become a Sailing Instructor, Drive-Boat Operator, Assisted Towing Captain, Water Taxi Operator, Fishing Charter Captain, or Mariner for the Captain's OUPV License exam".

The Captain's Certification course was offered to serve the ever-growing need for improved water safety by recreational boaters, and to provide local training for individuals interested in getting a Captain's license for commercial reasons. Look for a repeat of this certification course in future communications. For more information, contact Dave Baker at: david.baker@saintpaul.edu.
