Ninth Week of Fall Semester

​The cool air of autumn has arrived at Saint Paul College. Our students made it through midterms and enjoyed a much deserved break, while faculty engaged in professional activities for MEA.

It has been a busy week for staff as offices are being moved to develop a “one-stop shop” to better meet the needs of our students. Serving our students is our number one priority at the College and we are hopeful this change will streamline visits to Student Services and Academic Affairs, making the process more efficient.

Here’s a short recap of my activities and meetings this week:

  • Central Corridor Anchor Partnership – I attended the Central Corridor Anchor Partnership (CCAP) Executive Committee meeting to discuss and promote workforce system strategies for the healthcare occupational sector. We discussed the plans for a partnership apprenticeship program between Fairview Health Services and Minnesota State.
  • Minnesota Philanthropy Partners Board Meeting - I attended a Minnesota Philanthropy Partners Board of Directors meeting where we focused on Racial Equity Framework from the Minnesota Philanthropy Partners Strategic Framework.
  • Midway Chamber of Commerce Luncheon – I attended the Midway Chamber of Commerce luncheon and presented about racial disparities at the state and local level, and the importance of the role of higher education and community and technical colleges.
  • Hennepin County Director of Workforce and Talent Development – I met with the new Hennepin County Director of Workforce and Talent Development and discussed the significant role that Saint Paul College plays in training employees in the Health, IT, Business, Manufacturing, Construction, Transportation, and Service industries in the Twin Cities metro region.
  • Higher Ground Academy – I met with the Executive Director of Higher Ground Academy to discuss our educational partnership and access to higher education at Saint Paul College for their students.
  • Metropolitan State University President – I met with the new president of Metropolitan State University to discuss the expansion of our intentional partnership so students can complete a four-year degree at Saint Paul College.
  • Chefs Dinner – The Saint Paul College Culinary Arts department hosted their first annual Chefs Dinner and silent auction featuring 5 courses prepared by Chef Thomas Boemer of Revival and Corner Table and Chef Jorge Guzman of Surly Brewing. All proceeds from the event will go toward student scholarships.

Coming Up:

Baraza: A Black Woman’s Health Gathering – on Saturday, October 22, I will be attending Baraza: A Black Woman’s Health Gathering and presenting the keynote. Baraza is a community-driven event focused on improving the health and wellness of Twin Cities African and African American women. This year’s theme is “Healthy Lifestyle; Mind, Body and Spirit.”

Worth Viewing
I would like to share a recent docum​entary that aired on Twin Cities PBS/TPT about innovative partnerships and collaborations that help students stay on track to earn their high school diploma and pursue higher education. The documentary showcases Gateway to College, a partnership between Saint Paul College and Saint Paul Public Schools.

College News

Scholarships
Saint Paul College is expected to award 164 scholarships for $156,145 for Summer and Fall 2016 terms. So far, Saint Paul College has awarded 148 scholarships for $141,145. The Women’s Foundation funded scholarships will be announced next week.

Priority Registration
Priority Registration is now open for current students. Students can register early through their eServices account until November 2 when regular registration opens.

Finally, I so admire the resilience, grit, and sheer determination of our students, and would like to share this I met one of our adult students who recently completed the Culinary Arts program and is now pursuing a four-year degree at Metropolitan State University. She told me that her classes at Saint Paul College empowered her to effectively manage real world problems and challenges. She expressed that Saint Paul College will always have a special place in her heart and she is grateful for her experience at our school.
