Saint Paul College A Community & Technical College

Eighth Week of Summer Session

With less than a month to the start of fall semester, faculty and staff are passionately engaged with assisting our students with their registration and studies at the College. I am proud of our faculty and staff who put students and their interests at the center of everything we do at the College. We truly are a team who believe that the student is the reason we do what we do.

Here’s a short recap of my week:

  • Rondo Days - I attended the Rondo Days Celebration which was also a celebration of Philando Castile’s life. Philando was from the Rondo neighborhood and would have celebrated his birthday over the weekend.
  • A Community Conversation - Moving Toward Healing - Saint Paul College and the YWCA St. Paul hosted “A Community Conversation – Moving Toward Healing” led by Robin P. Hickman of Soul Touch Productions and Paul Williams of Project for Pride in Living. Through small group discussion, poetry and song, members of the community and the police force shared concerns openly about race and justice, bringing forth ideas to make our community stronger and to promote unity.

  • Express Registration - The College hosted an Express Registration event, one-stop shop to facilitate and assist new and returning students with fall 2016 registration. Students were able to apply, register for classes, take the ACCUPLACER test, get tours of their classrooms, and receive help with Financial Aid all in one day. It was such a great success that we are planning another Express Registration Day on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.
  • Comprehensive Workforce Solution meeting – Myself and three other Minnesota State Colleges and Universities presidents met to initiate a draft for the Comprehensive Workforce Solution model. This model ensures that we leverage the customized training and continuing education units of our colleges and universities so we can use their expertise and resources to strengthen Minnesota’s workforce in a manner that is financially sustainable and market competitive. This model enables us to serve more employers more proactively and comprehensively, and deliver greater value that draws upon the broad portfolio of expertise and assets across Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
  • Faculty Shared Governance Meeting – The Executive Leadership of the College and I met with the Faculty Shared Governance team to discuss fall enrollment, budget, efficiencies, marketing, innovative projects, Saint Paul College Foundation strategic initiative, Saint Paul College Strategic priorities, Information Assurance and Compliance, and the Racial Equity Framework.

At Saint Paul College, we are a community. As I walk the grounds I am reminded of this each and everyday. Our campus is one that promotes unity, peace, civility and safety. The Saint Paul College community reminds me of a poem by Maya Angelou called Human Family, and I find the following lines to be very compelling and comforting:

The variety of our skin tones
Can confuse, bemuse, delight,
Brown, and pink and beige and purple,
Tan and blue and white.

I note the obvious differences between each sort and type,
But we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

My Best,
Rassoul Dastmozd, PhD
