Saint Paul College A Community & Technical College

Seventh Week of Fall Semester

I hope none of us ever tire of hearing about the positive educational experience our students have at the College. So I just want to share with you an anecdote about a conversation I had this week with a student who is studying in our personal trainer program. She had been working in the health and fitness industry prior to starting at the College, and said she is looking forward to graduating and adding her new credentials to her career. She said that her experience at Saint Paul College has been awesome, very positive, and purposeful. Our goal is see that is the experience that all of our students have!

We are grateful to our students who choose Saint Paul College as their institution of choice for their studies.

Here’s a short recap of my activities and meetings this week:

This visit and meeting was arranged by the Consul of Mexico in Saint Paul, Minnesota Trade Office and delegation, and the chancellor and team from Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, and the presidents of colleges and several private Metro Area colleges. The faculty, staff, and students from both institutions immensely benefit from these exchanges and professional development activities during the visits that both institutions.
  • Interview with Federal Gazette - I met with a reporter from the Federal Gazette to discuss Minnesota’s current education and workforce outlook and steps Saint Paul College is taking to meet the demand for advanced skills in high demand areas such as manufacturing, construction trades, and healthcare in the context of local and regional demographic trends. I explained my views of a “pipeline” of talent that starts with K-12 partners and includes community organizations, our state colleges and universities, and partnerships with employers, and how Saint Paul College supports each stage of the pipeline by, for example, focusing on eliminating racial and economic disparities, making education affordable and accessible, building student success, and eliminating the achievement gap.
  • United Hospital Foundation meeting - I attended a United Hospital Foundation meeting to discuss setting major gift priorities, strategies, and review their future facility master plan.
  • Neighborhood House Resource Development Committee Meeting - I attended a Neighborhood House Resource Development Committee meeting to discuss fundraising priorities. Neighborhood House is an intentional partner of the College
  • Meeting with the President of Paul Quinn College - I met with the president of Paul Quinn College who is a former special White House assistant in President Clinton’s Administration and quite a dynamic educator. Paul Quinn College is a historically black college in Texas, and we discussed potential partnerships between our colleges.

College News

  • New Equity and Inclusion Committee Appointed - After consultation with the Cabinet team and President of MSCF, a New Equity and Inclusion Committee has been appointed and includes, faculty, staff and students. The committee will meet throughout the academic year and ensure that each of the six objectives that support Saint Paul College’s Equity and Inclusion Plan are on track and sufficient progress is being made. Standing against racism will be a collective and on-going effort at the College. We must develop an institutional infrastructure and skill-set that allows us to affirm and value cultural differences.
