Saint Paul College A Community & Technical College

The Fourth Week of Spring Semester 2017

I start my day as President/CEO of Saint Paul College shortly before 8:00am, and end my day typically around 8:00pm. I consider myself to be quite fortunate to work at the most diverse college in Minnesota. Each and every day I am able to see a beautiful tapestry of humanity coming and going, in search of bettering their lives. Not only do they enrich their own lives, but our community, our state, and our nation reap the benefits of their success as well.

Our students trust us with their future so we can facilitate learning and empowerment opportunities for them inside and outside the class. Through our own demonstration of compassion and empathy, we are their partner on this journey.

As a community of empathetic and compassionate practitioners, we gain so much from our students. I admit, we may not be able to solve all challenges that humanity faces around the globe, but in our own way, we provide opportunities and access to extraordinary and affordable higher education so that our students can be active, informed, and engaged citizens who advocate for the underprivileged, underserved, marginalized, and oppressed. For this, I am grateful to our students for being here and giving us the opportunity to serve you. And many thanks to our staff and faculty for going out of your way to serve our students and our community.

My week at a glance:

Metro Alliance Presidents Meeting – I attended a Metro Alliance Presidents meeting held at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. We discussed talent management, occupational training strategies, and marketing throughout the Twin Cities.

Comprehensive Workforce Solution Meeting – I met with three other Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Presidents to discuss the progress of the Comprehensive Workforce Solution model. This model ensures that customized training and continuing education programs at our colleges and universities strengthen Minnesota’s workforce in a manner that is financially sustainable and market competitive.

Central Corridor Anchor Partnership Executive Leadership Meeting – I attended a phone conference with the Executive Director of the Central Corridor Anchor Partnership to discuss the future of healthcare occupations and partnerships along the Green Line.

Charting the Future Implementation Team – The Dean of Institutional Research, Planning, and Effectiveness and I met with the Charting the Future Implementation Team to discuss the initiative’s progress.

Generation Next – The Executive Director of Generation Next visited Saint Paul College this week and I was proud to show her around our campus. Generation Next helped build the College’s Gateway to College Program and we are an intentional partner to the organization.

Meeting with Senator Fischbach – Minnesota Senator, Michelle Fischbach, visited Saint Paul College and spoke with students about higher education incentives. We also had lunch with several State of Minnesota employees and officials, including Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Chancellor, Steven Rosenstone, and a member of the Minnesota State Board of Trustees.

Strategic Planning Debut – Various members of the Saint Paul College community and I attended the Strategic Plan debut this week. The Strategic Plan has two main focuses; to produce long-range goals that will help guide and prioritize the work of Saint Paul College, and how system initiatives should align with the direction of the College. Thank you to everyone involved in this process for all your hard work.

Red Bull Crashed Ice ChampionshipRed Bull Crashed Ice is returning to the front steps of the Cathedral of Saint Paul for the sixth straight year! I am proud of our Culinary Arts department and our catering team for accommodating our guests. Red Bull Crashed Ice runs this weekend with parking provided by Saint Paul College.

I am grateful to be part of Saint Paul College, not only because of the support we receive from partnerships and our community, but also because of our dedicated faculty and staff who make this such an inclusive environment for learning.
