Third week of summer session is in full swing at the College, and we are also well on our way in preparing for fall semester. We welcomed and celebrated with new students for fall semester who are recipients of Workforce Development Scholarships. In all, 22 students will be receiving the Workforce Development Scholarships as new students in high-demand workforce programs.
As I was walking around the campus this week I chatted with several students, many of whom were from other institutions, who are enrolled for summer session courses at Saint Paul College. These students give high marks for their experiences at Saint Paul College. They commented on our welcoming atmosphere and the high quality of their interactions with faculty and staff.
I am grateful to our faculty and staff who go the extra mile and stretch the imagination of our students so they can explore limitless possibilities for themselves.
Here’s a short recap of my activities this week
Greater Metropolitan Workforce Council Board Meeting
I along with private and public sectors leaders attended the Greater Metropolitan Workforce Council Board meeting to discuss strategies that will benefit members of our communities who have traditionally been underserved and underemployed with a special focus on sector partnerships and career pathways to prosperity. Saint Paul College plays a critical role by training qualified talent for Minnesota’s economy and workforce shortage. Check out: saintpaul.edu/programs.

Friends of Saint Paul College awarded $2500 Workforce Development Scholarships for 22 new students entering one of the occupational clusters in health, IT and manufacturing. A breakfast was held to welcome and present the scholarship to these new Saint Paul College students. These scholarships are funded by the State of Minnesota, the Minnesota Precision Manufacturing Association (MPMA), and the Friends of Saint Paul College Foundation. I would like to thank all of the generous donors for giving these students such a great opportunity.

College Leadership Team Meeting
I attended the College Leadership Team meeting along with members of the Executive Leadership Team to discuss updates on Higher Learning Commission strategic initiatives, as well as tactical matters concerning the governance and operation of the College.
We interviewed several candidates for faculty positions at the College. Investing in full-time faculty positions is a strategic priority, and advances our commitment to Teaching and Learning.

I attended the EAB’s Community College Executive Forum (CCEF) in Washington, DC. LeadMN Meeting with Chancellor
Minnesota State Chancellor Malhotra and I met with the LeadMN community college students as part of their monthly meeting. Ongoing open dialogues and connection with students is paramount to the success of Minnesota State and Saint Paul College.
Power in Diversity Leadership Conference – Multicultural Student Services
I received an email this week from Angie Witte, St. Cloud State University Multicultural Student Services program coordinator, containing photos taken with one of our students, Hercules Goss-Kuehn who had attended the Leadership Conference in January. The theme was “Raising Voices Lifting Leaders,” offering college students of color and underrepresented students opportunities for personal growth and leadership development. Angie wrote about the photos, “These were from the day that we encouraged participants to wear traditional or cultural clothing. Some of our Hmong students dressed me up. It was such a pleasure meeting Hercules…He certainly is a great leader and your campus is lucky to have him. He represents you well.” Once again I am so proud of the students who represent Saint Paul College at various off-campus events.

Top graduates 2018: High achievers and words that inspired them
The Pioneer Press published their list of St. Paul public and private high school students ranked at the top of their graduating class, the colleges and universities they plan to attend, along with words that inspired them. I am inspired by the quote chosen about success by a Humboldt High School graduate who’ll be attending Saint Paul College: “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill
We’re honored to be selected as the College of choice by so many recent high school graduates. These students will be joining other new students from all age ranges, backgrounds, and walks of life in anticipation of an exciting new educational journey in the next phase of their lives!
It takes a team of dedicated practitioners to make dreams come true for our students.
I will end this week’s blog by sincerely thanking our tireless faculty and dedicated staff who assist our students each and every day in pursuit of their dreams at Saint Paul College.
I wish you a relaxing weekend.
