Saint Paul College strives to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for students through embracing an anti-racist and trauma-informed (ARTI) culture. The ARTI approach involves proactive measures to prevent and eliminate racism while also supporting a culture of safety, trust, empowerment, cooperation, and choice. We partner with organizations that share our passion for helping students succeed. One such partnership is with
Ujamaa Place.
“Ujamaa Place provides holistic transformation for young African-American men experiencing inequity at the intersection of race and poverty. We help them achieve brotherhood, stability, and personal success.”
Ujamaa Place empowers young African American men using a robust theory of transformation which begins with integrating foundational elements, including empowerment, culture, coaching, and person-centered support. They then use program elements for participant success, including academic and employment skill development and life skill development. Their desired outcome is to create stable housing, increase educational attainment, secure & retain work, connect with family and children, and eliminate contact with the penal system. Intending to establish a “pathway to prosperity,” President Otis Zanders knew this organization needed a strong educational partner who would welcome this challenge and shared this:
“This remarkable partnership with Saint Paul College has enhanced our operation where our men feel welcome on campus through an intentional approach to inclusion and diversity. It’s a great relationship that allows the good people back on track for success!
The focus of this partnership is giving everyone a chance to advance and earn a living wage, including establishing strategic steps intended to eliminate barriers to college or for these men. Customized training programs use an intentional approach to inclusion, which helps students feel welcomed on campus without committing to a four-year school. As Andrew Hamilton, Customized Training Representative at Saint Paul College, explains, “this successful customized model is hard to find anywhere else.”
The Ujamaa Place and Saint Paul College partnership has transformed young men by giving them the confidence and training necessary to go forward. If your organization is interested in partnering with Saint Paul College to help educate and train people from your organization, please contact
