Saint Paul College A Community & Technical College

Fifteenth Week of Fall Semester 2017

Fall Choir Concert and Recital Dec 5 2017.jpg

Our faculty and staff model and demonstrate student-centeredness each and every day. These acts of kindness are not random – they are at the center of what we believe, that the student is the most important person on our campus: https://www.saintpaul.edu/thestudentis

Here are just a few things that students told me about this week that shows that they do appreciate the kindness and concern shown to them by faculty and staff. I encountered a student from a skills trade program who told me his teacher stayed after school so this student could complete his coursework. Another student talked about how he appreciates the tutoring he receives in the tutoring center for his writing class. A third student said that she misplaced her books for the day, and one of our staff in the library provided her resources that she needed so she would not miss out on her studies.

To our faculty and staff, I could not have asked for better team members who make it a common practice to assist students, to ensure their success at Saint Paul College and in the greater community.

Here's a short recap of my week:

Complete College America 2017 Annual Convening – As a member of Minnesota Office of Higher Education Team, I attended the Complete College America Annual Convening in New Orleans, LA, along with legislators and the commissioner of the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. The year's theme, “Access to the American Dream," is aimed at reducing the achievement gap for students of color and sustaining actions to develop strategies that narrow the achievement gap. Complete College America is a national nonprofit, working with states to significantly increase the number of Americans with quality career certificates or college degrees and to close attainment gaps for traditionally underrepresented populations. Minnesota Construction Industry Workforce Alliance Meeting - the dean of Workforce Training and Continuing Education and I met with the executive director of Minneapolis Saint Paul Regional Workforce Innovation Network (MSPwin) to discuss Saint Paul College's leadership role with the Minnesota Construction Industry Workforce Alliance. Saint Paul College is leading a group of construction employers, union skills trade representatives, community based organizations, city and county representatives to develop a talent exchange platform where the needs for skilled trade construction workforce talent can be projected, and met, with the employers' projections in an intentional manner. Additionally discussed is how the workforce training providers are meeting the employer needs. This initiative is funded by DEED, McKnight, and MSPWIN.

Neighborhood House Board Meeting – I attended a board retreat and board meeting at Neighborhood House, an intentional partner of Saint Paul College. We discussed policies and strategies related to advocacy for immigrants and refugees.

The Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundations Community Impact Committee Meeting - Minnesota Philanthropy Partners is now called The Saint Paul & Minnesota Community Foundations, and I attended their Community Impact and Grants Committee meeting where we reviewed policy agenda, as well as their community impact grant budget, and processed grant proposals.

Hennepin County Workforce Leadership Council Meeting – I attended the Hennepin County Workforce Leadership Council meeting to discuss the Hennepin Career Pathways intentional and the engaged role that Saint Paul College can play in devising career pathways in construction, IT, business, finance, health, service, manufacturing, transportation, and skilled trades.
