Learning outside the classroom with a Collection of Stew

On Stage MN, in partnership with our Culinary Department, brings A Collection of Stew to Saint Paul College on April 27 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at City View Grill. At this invigorating event, culinary students prepare meals based on Yellow Tree Theatre and New Dawn Theatre's upcoming play, Passing Strange (Book and Lyrics by Stew – hence the stew theme). After the meal, participants read vital scenes from the associated play, bringing meaningful community dialogue. According to Chef Jason Ross, these past events have always generated exceptional learning experiences for all participants.

Partnering with 11 different Twin Cities smaller theaters and 23 different productions, On StageA Collection of Stew Flyer MN is a non-profit organization that effectively generates meaningful community dialogue around live theater. Their mission is to increase exposure for younger, non-traditional students to the theater by bringing innovative stories together in a fun, meaningful, and powerful way for students to help expand their understanding of various political, social, and cultural issues. They also provide discounts to the 11 theaters for students who want to see any of these plays in person.

Part of the value of a Saint Paul College education is that students benefit from the partnerships we have built through our 100+ years of collaborating with community leaders. Students also learn outside the classroom when they can enjoy activities where different disciplines come together and illustrate how a student's chosen field connects with other disciplines. Our partnership with On Stage MN has a solid and ongoing history of bringing students and the community together in ways that engage students in respectful, essential conversations on social, political, and cultural issues.

Lucas Erickson, On Stage MN Project Manager, shared how much he has enjoyed collaborating with Saint Paul College since 2016:

I fully respect the creativity with which Saint Paul College engages students beyond the classroom. It is heart-warming to see culinary students learn outside the kitchen just how their food relates to the culture of the people they serve in many unique ways. This school gets it right in the way it teaches, both inside and outside the classroom!

The Saint Paul College Culinary Arts Program offers both AAS Degree and diploma programs. The Culinary Arts program has established a prominent leadership position within the Twin Cities restaurant industry, as highlighted in the Jack Riebel - Standing Out with a Legacy of Culinary Leadership story.
