Saint Paul College A Community & Technical College

Ninth Week of Summer Session 2017

Fall registration is well underway and I am thankful to the dedicated Saint Paul College faculty and staff who assist new and returning students to make sure they are ready for the upcoming school year.

I am fortunate to work with passionate faculty and staff who truly care for our students. We are a dedicated and committed team that ensures when our students start here, they can go anywhere.

Here's a short recap of my week: SCRUBS CAMP 2017

Scrubs Camp – Nearly one-hundred high school students attended Scrubs Camp at Saint Paul College this week. I talked with several Scrubs Camp participants who expressed an interest to go to college and find careers in the healthcare industry. Throughout the week, students participated in hands-on sessions including; anatomy and physiology, medical devices, stem cell, simulated birthing, medical lab, lessons in empathy through the use of aging suits and field trips to employer sites. Scrubs Camp is a collaborative project between HealthForce Minnesota, Saint Paul College, Living Well, Fairview Health System, Children’s Minnesota, the Get Ready Program, Gillette Children’s Specialty HealthCare, HealthEast Medical Transportation Center, Medicine Education, and Saint Paul Public Schools.

Saint Paul Mayor's Innovation Cabinet – I met with several St. Paul community leaders to brainstorm and develop strategies to bring innovation and technology jobs to the city. For more information, please read St. Paul aims to attract more innovation and technology jobs, featured in the Star Tribune and watch the STP Innovates: Creative office space in Saint Paul video about work being done by the St. Paul Mayor's Innovation Cabinet.

United Hospital Foundation - I attended the Major Gift Committee meeting at the United Hospital Foundation.

Neighborhood House Board Meeting – I attended a Neighborhood House Board meeting. Neighborhood House is an intentional partner of Saint Paul College. I also participated in the Neighborhood House Volunteer Picnic which featured a fresh produce giveaway.

CyberWatch West – I chaired a phone conference for the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education CyberWatch West national visiting team. The CyberWatch West Center is comprised of regional institutions, education professionals, and industry partners. The primary initiatives are student development, curriculum development, revision and dissemination, faculty development, and outreach and partnership development.

African Scholars – Saint Paul College hosted three young African leaders who are currently in a U.S. State Department funded program at the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Several Saint Paul College deans and I provided an overview of post-secondary education in the U.S. and within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. They also toured our campus to view classrooms and labs.

High School Graduation Rate Discussions – I met with several community leaders in the Twin Cities to discuss key factors to improve high school graduation rates and how to identify root factors in the decline.

City of St. Paul Economic Development Partners – I met with the representatives for economic development from the City of Saint Paul and area organizations to discuss economic development and workforce development issues related to Saint Paul and Ramsey County.

GiveMN Launch – I attended the launch of GiveMN at the Saint Paul Foundation.

I would like to end this week by sharing a story about a student who has had several medical and health setbacks over the years, but is back in full swing of pursuing his academic journey at Saint Paul College. Our students are resilient and have grit. They inspire me. Behind every successful and high achieving student at Saint Paul College is a group of talented and passionate faculty, staff, family, and friends.

Kudos to ALL of you who support our students and inspire them along their journey.

I wish you a relaxing weekend.

Best,
