Second Week of Summer Term

​​With all the news about the high cost of college, we’re very proud that Saint Paul College has some of the lowest rates in the Metro Area and MnSCU system.

Even with our low rates, we know that every penny counts for students, so I want to put a spotlight on ways we can help students make college more affordable.

Scholarships
Students should check out scholarship opportunities available through Friends of Saint Paul College www.saintpaul.edu/Scholarships and students attending fall can apply through July 1, 2016 – the process is very straightforward! ​​

Tuition-Free Programs for Fall 2016
Every student should first apply for Financial Aid to see what aid is available to help finance the cost of education.

I want to bring some tuition-free programs to your attention – whether these programs are a fit for you or someone you know – please spread the word!

Summer Term
For those students who still might want to get ahead and complete courses during the summer at our low tuition rates, our 2nd summer session is 8-weeks long and starts June 13. The last 5-week summer session begins July 5, 2016, so check out our course schedule and we might have the exact course you’re looking for: www.saintpaul.edu/CourseSchedule. ​

Here’s a short recap of a few of my activities this week:

Meetings with Community Leaders:I met with three community leaders/educators to discuss Minnesota’s current and future economic and workforce trends, and the critical role that Saint Paul College plays in creating opportunities for a prosperous Minnesota by offering state of the market programs as well as new and innovative programs. Saint Paul College is an intentional partner, convener, and connector in our community. We are truly a college of our community.

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) Leadership Council Meeting- I attended a Leadership Council meeting along with the other presidents of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities institutions and members of Chancellor Rosenstone’s staff. We discussed progress with the Charting the Future initiative, current legislative session, concurrent enrollment, workplace solutions model, MnSCU branding update, and operating budget outlook. ​

Neighborhood House Resource Development Meeting - Attended a resource development meeting at Neighborhood House, an intentional pa​rtner of Saint Paul College. Neighborhood House helps over 15,000 people each year with basic needs, education, multiple youth programs, and health and well-being and all of their programs are offered for free to participants. Neighborhood House is an intentional partner of Saint Paul College.

Meeting with former MnSCU Board of Trustee Member I met with a former MnSCU Board of Trustee member to discuss the state of higher education in Minnesota. Minnesota is facing a lower than national average unemployment rates with a looming major talent gap. Moreover, the critical role that MnSCU institutions to remedying these challenges.

District Energy St. Paul – I attended a District Energy St. Paul Board meeting. District Energy St. Paul is considered the most notable in the United States for its use of renewable energy sources and implementation of energy conservation measures. City of St. Paul and District Energy will host the international IDEA conference this summer. See: http://www.idea2016.org/ .​​

Labor Management Institute (LMI) Annual - The College hosted the Labor Market Information Institute LMI Annual Forum for LMI professionals and users to exchange ideas and innovative practices and learn from other states and from experts in the field. Saint Paul College presented a collective impact Construction System Change initiative as well as the Trading Up program that provides a career pathway into the skilled building and construction trades, for qualified applicants.

Partnership with Legacy IT3 Program- Saint Paul College has partnered and will host the Legacy IT3 Program and the Leadership Team at the College. Legacy IT3 Program is designed to promote active participation for high school age students high demand occupations such as IT, Health, Transportation, Construction, Advanced Manufacturing, and Energy. State of Minnesota will be facing major workforce shortage if we do not recruit and cultivate the talent and expertise for these high demand and high wage occupations.

Minnesota State Colleges Student Association (MSCSA) – Chancellor Rosenstone, Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs, and I met with the new MSCSA student leadership team, as part of their monthly meeting. Ongoing open dialogues and connection with students is paramount to our success as an institution and MnSCU system.

I will end this week’s blog by thanking our dedicated and hardworking faculty and staff who go the extra mile to deliver on our promise to be a student-centered institution. I am also grateful to our community partners and business and industry leaders who support our students and our college.
