Program Outcomes for Sport and Exercise Sciences AAS, Diploma and Certificate programs:

  • Graduates will provide application of Fitness Coaching techniques to positively contribute to the well-being of the client in a safe and skillful manner.
  • Grad​​uates will be prepared to take a national exam for Certification in Personal Training/Fitness Coaching.
  • Graduates will be prepared to take the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) exam for Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES). ​

Program Outcomes for Sport and Exercise Sciences AAS and Diploma programs ​also include:

  • Graduates may obtain membership with the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP). 

  • Graduates will be prepared to perform Health & Wellness Coaching Services.

  • Graduates will be prepared to take the American Council on Exercise (ACE) exam for Health Coach Certification.

Sport and Exercise Sciences Gainful Employment infoSport and Exercise Sciences Certificate

Sport and Exercise Sciences professionals instruct clientele in the betterment of their health through and integrated approach using sound knowledge of appropriate sciences. Functional training techniques, aerobic exercise and advanced stretching modalities (such as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Active Isolated Stretching (AIS)) are implemented appropriately based on initial and continuous feedback and testing. 

Graduates of the Sport and Exercise Sciences Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree program perform patient assessments and build customized fitness, wellness and nutrition plans for individuals. This program is designed for immediate employment after graduation or transfer to baccalaureate degree programs that have articulation agreements with the College.

Graduates of the Sport and Exercise Sciences Diploma program perform patient assessments and build customized fitness, wellness and nutrition plans for individuals.

Graduates of the Sport and Exercise Sciences Certificate program perform patient assessments and build customized fitness, wellness and nutrition plans for individuals.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics listed Sport, Exercise and Fitness as one of the top overall job openings requiring postsecondary training. Employment is expected to grow by 24 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. As businesses and insurance organizations continue to recognize the benefits of health and fitness programs for their employees, corporate wellness program employment will continue to rise increasing the need for workers in these areas.​

Program Delivery Methods
Hybrid, online, traditional in-class courses and hands-on training in state-of-the-art Fitness Lab on Saint Paul College campus, St. Paul, MN​

Licensing or certification exams are independent of graduation requirements.​

Textbook and Supply Costs
Students should expect to spend approximately $1,000.00 for books and supplies. This cost is in addition to tuition and fees.

Sport and Exercise Sciences Diploma

  • Fundamentals of a healthy diet and the role that carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and minerals play in maintaining health and fitness.
  • A solid awareness of nutrition, how to utilize that awareness and make suggestions to clientele where appropriate.
  • Basic knowledge of body structure and function, with emphasis on the healthy body.
  • Components of human movement, muscles of the body, origin and insertion sites, nerve innervation, associated bones and bony landmarks and action.
  • Major components of fitness analysis, exercise program design, functional training program design and the skills necessary for teaching individual and group activities.
  • Management of common soft-tissue injuries through inhibitory techniques, bracing, taping, advanced stretching and corrective exercise techniques.​
