​​​​​​​Peer Tutors

Peer tutors in Tutoring Services provide individual and small group tutoring services to all current Saint Paul College students in our Tutoring Center. Tutors are high-achieving students who excel in their coursework. Peer tutors are trained to help students understand assignments, explain the key concepts of course materials, offer feedback and encouragement, and share appropriate resources.

Interested in becoming a peer tutor?

No previous tutoring experience is required; training is provided. Some of the benefits of peer tutoring include:

How to apply to become a peer tutor
  1. Search for a “peer tutor” position in our College’s Career and Placement System (JobsOnline) job posting system.
  2. Complete and submit the online application in JobsOnline including your résumé. Students applying for a Writing Tutor position are required to provide a Writing Sample (preferably a research paper.)
  3. Ask 2 faculty members to submit a Tutoring Services Faculty Recommendation Form. Instructions for submission are available on the form.
Qualifications needed to become a peer tutor

Because peer tutors need to help students understand assignments, explain the key concepts of course materials, offer feedback and encouragement, and share appropriate resources, below are listed the qualities desired for peer tutors to possess, minimum required qualifications and preferred qualifications:

Good candidates will possess the following qualities:
  • Desire to help others learn
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Strong active listening skills
  • Desire to work with a diverse population of learners
  • Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature
Minimum Required Qualifications for Employment
  • High academic achievement, especially in subject area(s) applicant wishes to tutor
  • Current Saint Paul College enrollment in at least one credit
  • Two strong recommendations from current or previous instructors

For Writing Tutor Applicants
High academic achievement, especially including completion of ENGL 1711 (Composition I) and/or completion of a reading/writing intensive course (i.e., Sociology, Philosophy) with an “A”

For Math Tutor Applicants
High academic achievement in subject area(s), including completion of Math 1730 (College Algebra) with an “A”

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3.5 Grade Point Average
  • Eligible for Federal Work-Study To be eligible for Work-Study, which is preferred but not required for this position, a student must:
    1. Have received a Financial Aid Award Letter
    2. Be registered for a minimum of 6 credits
    3. Meet the position GPA requirements
  • Previous tutoring experience
