On Thursday, May 1, Saint Paul College proudly welcomed a new group of exceptional students into the Mu Alpha Theta honor society. This event celebrated not only their academic achievements but also their commitment to the pursuit of mathematical excellence and personal growth.

The induction ceremony was hosted by Dean of STEM, Enyinda Onunwar.
Each inductee was introduced by a faculty sponsor, who shared heartfelt stories about the student’s achievements, dedication, and inspiring journeys within mathematics and beyond. Whether it was overcoming challenges, excelling in rigorous coursework, or demonstrating leadership both inside and outside the classroom, each inductee had a unique story to tell.

The highlight of the evening was when the inductees officially took the Mu Alpha Theta pledge, committing to uphold the principles of scholarship, service, and leadership, while promoting the enjoyment and understanding of mathematics.

This year’s inductees brought unique and inspiring stories to the table, showcasing the diversity and talent within Saint Paul College’s community. A few standout examples include:

  • Abdirahman Omar: An engineering major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Abdirahman’s academic excellence and passion for STEM were evident through his leadership as a tutor and teaching assistant. Inspired by his love for problem-solving and curiosity sparked by “The Big Bang Theory,” he advises future students to keep practicing and never lose sight of their goals.
  • Carrie Anne Johnson: Returning to college after 30 years, Carrie Anne has exemplified resilience and determination. Balancing her academic goals with health challenges and single parenthood, she credits her success to her drive to understand mathematics, not just memorize it.
  • Nazdana Ahmadi: With her sights set on aerospace engineering, Nazdana’s tenacity and love for numbers have driven her to success. She is quick with numbers and has a natural instinct for problem-solving, often spotting shortcuts that help her work efficiently.

Mu Alpha Theta is an honor society and a community that promotes understanding of mathematics among high school and two-year college students.

The society also provides students with opportunities for growth, including access to scholarships, competitions, service opportunities, and a network of like-minded peers who share a passion for mathematics.
