Syed Joy moved from Bangladesh to the Twin Cities area in 2022 to better himself through education and find a nice job. Two years later, with a 2-year Criminal Justice Transfer Associate of Science Degree, Syed now works for Hennepin County as a Security Officer, earning around a six-figure salary with benefits. He quickly earned this salary with hard work, including overtime hours. The educational journey to his early career success was intense and included a switch in schools because of high costs and limited international student support. He transferred to Saint Paul College, which he describes as putting him on the best track he could only dream of in continuing his father’s path to working in law enforcement.

When Syed consulted with family, friends, and advisors, some were skeptical that a two-year school was the correct answer for Syed. He decided to do his research and found SPC the most impressive for four reasons: 1) low tuition fees; 2) excellent campus setting; 3) student-centered focus with many clubs to join; and 4) an invaluable, diverse International Group with many support systems in place. Still adjusting to the English language, Syed pushed himself to take a public speaking class with trepidation that he would be mocked or laughed at. Syed discovered that these fears never came to fruition as the teachers and fellow students quickly made him feel comfortable learning this critical skill.

Syed found himself asking many questions about SPC’s International Student Services and was always happy with the answers that helped him stay on track for graduating on schedule. Syed’s inquisitive nature brought a warm and friendly presence to other international students.

It was always clear that Syed was passionate about Saint Paul College and his major, Criminal Justice. Syed was always focused on making the most of his time in school. It was a pleasure to help Syed navigate the requirements of his international student status and introduce him to other resources available at SPC. My favorite memory of Syed is the energy he brought to our new international student orientation in August 2022, which inspired everyone to connect and help each other make it through their education plans and goals.

His impact on fellow students was also strong, as shared by a fellow classmate.

I took a Criminal Justice class with Syed Joy at SPC and was amazed by his ability to connect with every subject matter and relate it to real-life conversations. His resilience and determination to promote public safety and justice were truly intangible assets in our classroom

Following his graduation in December 2023, Syed aggressively applied for 100 jobs. He was excited to receive the offer from Hennepin County to serve as a Security Officer, where he often works closely with the Minneapolis Police Department. Though very content with his current job, Syed’s next goal is to work for the FBI or a local Police Department.
