What happens when you combine engineering, global experience, and a passion for education? You meet Alpha Mbennah, a Tanzanian changemaker whose story demonstrates how college can serve as a launchpad for real-world impact.

Ten years ago, Alpha earned dual bachelor’s degrees in engineering sciences and electrical engineering from two colleges in Minnesota. But visa challenges forced him to return to Tanzania, where he quickly landed a job with a company that ironically had ties to Minnesota. That twist of fate sparked a journey that would blend engineering, education, and entrepreneurship.

In 2021, while volunteering as a teacher, Alpha experienced firsthand the challenges educators face in creating fair and efficient student reports. So, he launched “Spinno” and developed SPIN-ED, a software tool that automatically generates report cards and analyzes academic data. It’s now used in schools throughout Tanzania to save time and enhance learning outcomes.

But Alpha didn’t stop there.

Realizing his clients needed more advanced tech solutions, he returned to Minnesota to study Computer Science at Saint Paul College. Why SPC?

Saint Paul College is known for hands-on learning, a welcoming environment, and professors who keep it real. In addition, the program simulates the pressures of the professional world, preparing students to meet high expectations with confidence. There’s no better way to simulate a professional computer science environment than this. I want to live and work in a culture like that for the rest of my life!

SPC’s motto, “Fit in, Stand out,” resonates deeply with Alpha. It’s a place where students from all backgrounds are empowered to showcase their talents and solve real problems. For Alpha, it’s not about getting a degree-it’s about building a company that transforms education in Tanzania and beyond.

Thinking about college? Alpha’s story proves that your education can be more than a path to a job-it can be the foundation for innovation, leadership, and global impact.
