3M and Saint Paul College hosted “Signing Day” for Saint Paul College students in career and technical as well as culinary education programs who are getting ready to graduate from college with high-demand, high-wage career paths. Many of these students have participated in SkillsUSA and will go to Atlanta for the national SkillsUSA competition this June. Students attending the National SkillsUSA competition include students in electrical, welding, sheet metal, cosmetology, and culinary arts, as well as one baking and pastry student.

This event celebrated industry partnerships, leadership opportunities with SkillsUSA, and strong faculty and campus leadership support for students pursuing these career paths. SPC President Deidra Peaslee remarked on the growing demand and importance of career and technical education now and in the future. Former Vikings player Scott Studwell encouraged SPC graduates to embrace their future career paths and leadership opportunities. 3M’s Public Affairs office explains why they are investing in this vital partnership with SPC:

According to the Associated General Contractors of America, 94% of contractors report difficulty finding skilled trades workers, a sentiment echoed by our industrial customers. This statistic underscores the critical demand for skilled professionals in today’s workforce. At 3M, we are dedicated to advancing the workforce of the future through investments in education and training programs. This commitment is why participating in the National Signing Day event at St. Paul College was so important to us. Investing in skilled trades education is not just about filling jobs; it’s about building a stronger, more resilient future for everyone

Twelve students signed a Letter of Intent committing to pursuing additional education that helps them prepare for trade or culinary careers. One draftsperson committed to joining Anderson Cabinets, and electrical students dedicated themselves to serving as apprentices in local unions. Two culinary students and one baking and pastry student were recognized, and two already work at local restaurants. After the signing ceremony, students and faculty led a tour for guests to see the equipment used in various trades. In addition, students held a skills exhibition for guests.

SkillsUSA connected 3M to Saint Paul College for this unique event. Though this was the first event of this kind in the area, there was much discussion about continuing this event in future years. SPC Cabinetmaking Instructor Tom Hillstead described the event as a fantastic celebration of numerous student successes and was excited to partner with 3M on this incredible event!
