At Saint Paul College, preparing students for real careers isn’t just a goal—it’s a proven outcome. With 79% of graduates working in their field within a year, the college continues to focus on programs that translate directly into opportunity. Now, the Health Science Department is building on that success with an exciting new addition designed for students who are passionate about fitness, wellness, and helping others.
The newly launched Fitness and Wellness Professional Certificate arrives at a time when the industry is rapidly expanding. With employment in fitness and wellness projected to grow significantly over the next decade, students entering this field can expect a wide range of career possibilities. Whether the goal is personal training, wellness coaching, or working in corporate health programs, the demand for knowledgeable, skilled professionals is only increasing.

What makes this program especially appealing is how quickly it can move students toward those opportunities. The certificate can be completed in just one semester. More importantly, the program emphasizes hands-on learning, giving students the chance to practice real-world skills instead of simply learning theory. From health and wellness coaching to holistic nutrition, therapeutic exercise, and fitness training, students gain a well-rounded foundation they can immediately use in the workforce.
Leading the program is new faculty member Charles “Coach Chuck” Turner, whose experience brings a powerful, real-world perspective into the classroom. With more than 13 years in health and human performance and over 20,000 hours of coaching experience, Turner has worked with a wide range of individuals, from beginners to seasoned athletes. His approach to teaching is grounded in understanding how the body adapts to movement and stress over time—knowledge that directly impacts strength, posture, and long-term health.
In his classes, students won’t just learn concepts; they’ll apply them. Turner integrates movement assessment, functional strength training, core stabilization, and corrective exercise into his instruction, helping students see how small adjustments can make a major difference in performance and injury prevention. His teaching connects science to practice, giving students both the “why” and the “how” behind effective training.
Beyond the classroom, Turner is deeply connected to the local fitness community. As the owner of Movement Lab in St. Paul and the founder of a community-based fitness initiative known as “The Breakfast Club,” he brings firsthand knowledge of what it takes to succeed in the industry. His experience designing corporate wellness programs and working in diverse fitness settings offers students insight into multiple career paths they can pursue after completing the certificate.
The department’s upgrades extend beyond new programming and faculty. The campus Fitness Lab is also receiving a technology boost that reflects the evolving needs of today’s students. With the addition of three panning cameras, classes can now be recorded and live-streamed, allowing students to stay engaged even if they can’t physically be on campus. Whether balancing work, dealing with an illness, or recovering from an injury, students will have more flexibility without falling behind.
Together, these updates represent more than just new offerings—they reflect a commitment to meeting students where they are and preparing them for where they want to go. The Fitness and Wellness Professional Certificate provides a fast, practical pathway into a growing field, supported by expert instruction and modern learning tools.
For students ready to turn their passion for health and fitness into a meaningful career, this program offers a clear next step—and the confidence to take it.
