What if the skills you learn today could save someone’s life tomorrow? That question became real for Areli Matson when she decided to pursue a career in healthcare. When Areli moved from Mexico City to the US in 2019, she never imagined she’d eventually be preparing to help patients breathe easier. After working various jobs through the challenges of the COVID-19 era in Florida and Las Vegas, Areli realized she wanted more than just a job — she wanted a career that would make a meaningful difference.

With a degree in Translation from Mexico, Areli initially focused on improving her English and exploring new opportunities. In 2022, she met Brendan, her future husband, who encouraged her to pursue further education. Together, they noticed the increasing demand for respiratory therapists, a vital role in hospitals and clinics, especially after the pandemic highlighted the importance of lung health.
Areli attended an SPC Open House in April 2023 and enrolled in the Respiratory Therapy program that fall. At first, the enrollment process felt overwhelming, but SPC’s staff guided her every step of the way. Soon, she was immersed in hands-on learning: working in the Simulation Center (a “mini hospital”), mastering ventilators, and practicing pediatric care techniques. Her clinical rotations at Hennepin County Medical Center opened her eyes to the real-world impact of respiratory care.
One lesson that stuck with Areli? The devastating effects of smoking. She’s seen firsthand how it damages the heart and lungs, and she hopes to inspire others to make healthier choices. To lead by example, Areli maintains a regular fitness routine to keep her own lungs strong.
Looking ahead, Areli plans to join a Twin Cities hospital after graduating in Spring 2026 and take her board exam immediately to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Her advice to future healthcare students:
Don’t be afraid to start something new. Every class, every rotation teaches you something that could save a life!
