Culinary students embarked on a nine-day foodie’s dream trip throughout Italy, soaking up the Mediterranean atmosphere. Culinary instructor, Sara Johannes, led Saint Paul College’s first study abroad program from May 2 – 11, 2026. What did students do, and how was the experience overall?

In Italy, food is an expression of love. It is how you show those around you that you care for them. Having a love for food means you also have a love for those you are preparing it for and for yourself.

Exploring Italy’s Slow Food Movement and Culinary Traditions

Italy is experiencing the Slow Food Movement, a cooking focus on protecting regional identity, traditional craftsmanship, agricultural biodiversity, and sustainable food systems in an increasingly industrialized global food economy. The Slow Food Movement is an ideal experience for SPC students and all foodies alike. They can experience Italy’s incredible food culture at its roots, working with expert producers and chefs, many of whom use the same techniques established centuries ago.

What Culinary Students Learned from Studying Abroad in Italy

After recovering from jet lag and the more than nine-hour flight back to Minnesota, students reflected on this one-of-a-kind Italian excursion. They praised the personal and professional transformation they experienced. Students better understand food pathways and sustainability, as well as a chef’s responsibility when making decisions for customers and guests. They now understand the connection between agriculture, craftsmanship, hospitality, culture, and guest experience. An understanding that they will carry into their careers.

Scholarships Make Culinary Study Abroad Accessible

Financial accessibility was a huge consideration while staff planned the trip. SPC partnered with the Marco Polo Institute, chef instructors, and students to host a fundraising dinner. The partnership raised nearly $25,000 that was shared as scholarships to students who applied. Thus ensuring that any student could go on this life-changing experience in Italy.

A Successful First Culinary Study Abroad Program

SPC’s first foray into international learning experiences was a massive hit. Students were transformed by the experience, and Italy was such a wonderful first host. The Culinary Arts department plans to continue offering this international program. Saluti! Where will SPC’s next unforgettable international adventure take us?
